The ultimate result of photography is just a printed photo, which works without battery and without any electronic screen. To get a printed photo from a digital file we need a printer. Classic darkroom is always welcome, but it became rather a luxury.

Now, there is question, what printer could we use, Canon, Epson or maybe some other company? There are pros and cons related to different printers models, but, based on my experience I can definitely say that Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 is a very good printer, assuming that the maximum image it produces (A2) is sufficient for your needs.

However, there are printers which can print photos size A3 or A3+. So, what is better - to buy Canon Pro 1100 or maybe Canon Pro 310?

I had both Canon Pro 310 and Canon Pro 1100, I would recommend the latter one due to maximum print size it can produce.

Sizes: A3 vs A3+

The A3+ size comes with a serious inconvenience - it is more difficult to find framing, and other printing related accessories for A3+ than for A3. Also, both A3 and A3+ still feel somehow not big enough. The perception jump happens starting with about A2 size. When you hold A2 size print (or larger) you feel that it is large print.

Actually, the size A2 was the main reason I bought Canon PRO-1100 despite its much higher maintenance cost. Both printers use ink for maintenance, and after some time when the printer is not used, significant amount of the ink is used to ensure that print quality will be high.

The full package of all inks for Canon PRO-1100 can be higher than half of cost of a new printer. If you regularly sell prints, that is not a problem.

Compared to Canon PRO-1100

I would say, that it is basically the same, but for some specific kinds of prints you can, maybe, find difference. On average, I would say, that it is rather not worth to upgrade from Canon PRO-310 to Canon PRO-1100, and by not upgrading you can save a lot of money, especially due to ink cost.

On the other size, if large formats like A2 is important for you, definitely upgrade is the only option.

Overall, Canon PRO-1100 is better than Canon PRO-310, the point is, if the differences in quality and/or size, and maintenance cost matter for you at all.
